Rain Washes Out Huntingdon And Ffos Las

The Boxing Day meetings at Huntingdon and Ffos Las have been abandoned due to the heavy rain which has fallen in the last 24 hours.

Huntingdon clerk of the course Sulekha Varma had initially planned to inspect at 8am on Christmas Day after the Environment Agency warned of the possibility of flooding in the nearby Alconbury and Ellington Brooks.

Varma later brought that check forward to 12pm on Christmas Eve as water levels continued to rise but as the track has now flooded, she has no option but to call off the card.

She said: "The water is flowing in quite quickly now, it has started to come onto the track and the stables are already gone.

"Unfortunately we seemed to be cursed, but I suppose the one bonus is that we got the Peterborough Chase meeting in this year.

"We looked set for a mild Christmas and not long ago we were thinking we'd escape any of this.

"It's not the rain on the track that's the problem, it's the fact that it has fallen elsewhere and that is coming down to us."

At Ffos Las, general manager Tim Long inspected the track but found the course to be unraceable after heavy rain throughout Monday.

"We had 22 millimetres of rain in total yesterday and that has left the ground completely saturated with areas of standing water," he said.

"From Wednesday of last week to Sunday, we had 60mm of rain and then we had another 22mm and even with a dry forecast, I'm sure it would not dry out in time.

"We have more rain forecast tonight and into Christmas Day though, so we thought it best to make a decision and let everyone know."
